Tapping Summit Review

Amongst my own researches during the last few weeks, I avidly followed the Tapping World Summit, along with 300,000 other people. This is definitely a tool that works, and works well. I obviously wasn’t alone in thinking this, as the number of tweets and twitters for each speaker increased each day.

I started out listening to the two speakers each day with my usual level of scepticism. We are often, especially on the internet, promised great cures for all kinds of things, so I approach with caution. It’s always important to look at how any new ideas fit into the frameworks and tools that already work for us, rather than throwing out everything we have already learned. Tapping fits comfortably with the tools and methods I already use, so it is a genuine addition.

All of the speakers stressed that if you have a particularly difficult trauma, it is better to get proffesional support. That is always true, but there are many areas we can safely work on our own. Many of the speakers at The Tapping Summit are highly qualified psychologists who have have incorporated Tapping into their client work. Each speaker had a unique approach, and bringing in different view points from their professional experience, although the Tapping routines largely remained the same.

These are just a few of my own personal highlights and insights which I believe are useful and thought provoking, whatever approach to Personal Development you are using.

Highlights

Margaret Tuttle – From Debt to Financial Wealth

Margaret deals with finances very specifically, using ‘money’ rather than just ‘abundance’, which she believes is a woolly term our minds don’t recognise. She got right down to basics, and explained how she splits money into 4 differing aspects; debt, income, savings and income goals or commitments. I found this way of looking at the differing ways we approach and feel about our money very helpful.

Margaret pointed out that our ‘bad’ feelings about debt need to be cleared before we can begin to move forward to financial success. Having debt is traumatic and does impact our everyday actions and thoughts around money. Until we acknowledge how we feel, and clear it, it does continue to block our way forward.

The Tapping process, always begins with this  acknowledging of our negative feelings and clearing them, before moving on to the commitments we want to make. Recognising the differing aspects of money also enables us to be clearer on our goals. Are we wanting a pay rise, or to increase our savings, or to find a whole new way to bring income into our lives? Obviously, the clearer we are on our goals, the more likely we will be to achieve them, and be inspired on the steps to take towards them.

Self Confidence Boosting

One of the reasons I recommend Tapping, is the way that it separates our negative feelings from our feelings about ourselves. Each statement about the problem or negative feeling, is also accompanied by a statement on accepting ourselves. For example, from Margaret’s session:

” Even though I have all this debt, and it is so real, so overwhelming, I totally honour who I am, and accept my feelings about it.”

This is very important! When we have negative feelings we immediately compound them by feeling bad about ourselves. We blame ourselves  for whatever it was we think we did to get into this situation, for even having negative feelings. To love and own ourselves, whatever we are feeling, whatever is going on in our lives is a vital first step in healing. In fact, it is a gift of life for all of us. If you used nothing else from tapping, this one thing, the ability to remember to love, honour and accept yourself in your bad moments, will bring the most incredible relief, all by itself.

Mary Ayers  – Zero to Hero

I absolutely adored Mary. She explained, so succinctly, how the minute we start thinking about stepping forward, our mind and body are already running their protection programme – called Fear. Just realising that this is a natural and protective programme aimed at keeping us safe, takes some of the sting out. We can even see how funny it is, and that goes a long way to busting the process. It is so obvious that when we are about to step out and do something we have no experience of, our mind is going to want to keep us safe. In the past we have already found that new experiences and change can be painful, hence these fear responses will only increase with age.

Dealing with fear is a great way to use tapping, to acknowledge and reduce it, before tapping our commitment to our goals and actions. Wherever we have fear of that dangerous place, the unknown, tapping is clearly a great way to get past it. It’s not just a one time process, for as Mary points out, we need to keep going for long enough for our actions to make a difference. Change always takes time, and too often we aren’t able to sustain our new actions for long enough for them to become habits.

Acknowledging our Wholeness AND our emotions

Mary’s start point for tapping on fear will ring so many bells, I include it here, with apologies for the length. So often it helps just to know we aren’t alone, and I am sure we all know these places, but perhaps don’t love ourselves enough through them.

“Even though my body starts to run my fear response, as soon as I think about taking action, as soon as I think about making the decision to take action, I accept that it’s just my body’s response.

Even though I start to get that familiar feeling, of anxiety, just thinking about the future, just thinking about deciding, I accept myself even with these feelings

Even though my mind and body gets so overwhelmed, with emotion, when I even think about taking action, when I even think about making this decision, I am accepting that this is how I do it now, and perhaps I can find other ways of responding.”

Nick Ortner – Tapping to Achieve Your Goals

Nick, a lead in founding the summit, described how he felt inspired to make a documentary film on Tapping. He hadn’t a clue where to begin, with neither the skills nor the money to carry out his project. Basically, he said he just tapped his way through. Every fear and problem that came up, he tapped on it. You can see the results and find out more about his video, The Tapping Solution (formerly “Try It On Everything”) and pick up a Free Copy of the Tapping EBook here.

My Tapping Results Todate

There is quite a lot going on in my life at the moment that requires active responses from me in a range of life areas. Getting up the other morning, I looked at what needed doing, and could see I might have one of those days where I did anything but the things on my list. So, I decided that I didn’t want to go down that route, and that I would use this new tool and tap my way through my day.

I frequently do my ‘morning pages’. These work because in acknowledging how our feelings right after we wake up, we often clear the negative thoughts and feelings away. That is similar to how the initial acknowledging of feelings in tapping works, but with the tapping it becomes more focussed, more connected. So I wrote and tapped for just a few minutes. Then I started writing ‘My Perfect Day’, which is where I list the things I would like to do and achieve in my day.

I had only written down two things, when I felt impelled to rush off happily and do one of them. Then I came back to the list, and started to write some more … with the same effect!! I think it was lunch time before I managed to finish the list of my perfect day. In between was lots of inspired activity, all of which was to the point, not the distractions I can often come up with.

It was as if the ‘threat’ of my tapping my way through the day, caused my procrastinating fear mind to give up on all of its subterfuges. Apart from the initial tapping on how I was feeling, I didn’t need to do any tapping the rest of the day. Now, this was probably beginner’s luck, and next time I won’t hesitate to tap my way through one of these days.

Understanding lifts so many barriers for us, and I really found this an illuminating series of talks. I will definately be recommending next Year’s Tapping Summit and any useful materials on Tapping released throughout the year.

How to Beat Recession: Step Two

Get Clear

In Part One of Recession Busting, we summarised our route to a better future as:

  • choose to expand ourselves and our lives
  • start looking at alternative ways to find our happiness
  • take responsibility for what is happening in our lives right now
  • explore our personal possibilities
  • dream bigger
  • take actions including learning new skills
  • to create the life we want to live

Having made the choice to expand your life, Step Two is to review your possibilities for a happier and more successful way ahead. Unless you already know what you want to do, reading and research to gain ideas and find the courage to move forward is the next step. Below I have listed exercises and resources that you can use and research for yourself. We each have differing starting points and are prepared to run at different speeds, depending on the circumstances of our lives.

Choose the start point that most resonates with you, where you are up to now.

I don’t have a clue what else I can do

What Next? is a very simple exercise for thinking your way beyond the box of your current situation or occupation. I have used this exercise with many students over the years to help open up their world of possibilities. Don’t be deceived by it’s apparent simplicity, it’s very effective. You need to look at all of the possibilities, even some you may have rejected in the past. The steps for What Next? The Exercise is onsite here so you can get started right away!

From this simple start, I went from a stay home mother with no qualifications to middle aged undergraduate studying my passion, human communication. From there I became a college teacher and then on to fulfil dreams of writing a personal development and childrens’ book.

How can I turn my skills  to my advantage?

I only recently came across Loral Langemeier’s brilliant list relating 1000 skills to services. It’s free to download as a PDF file, and does a lot of thinking outside of the box for you. Don’t be put off by the title, it is a great list of ideas, using the same three column format familiar from the What Next? exercise. You can use it along with the exercise or stand alone, to see what a world of possibilities is out there. I was really impressed by the range.

For some people it could undoubtedly be the start of a whole new way of living, but for all of us it is great stimulus material as we research our possibilities. You will also find a link there to an audio talk by Loral,  ‘5 Secrets to Fast Cash’. And no, I have not ignored my own advice, I am not suggesting a get rich quick scheme, it’s about the 5 steps you need to take to start your own service business. Britishers be warned, Loral does talk very fast … even faster than Carrie Wilkerson.

I am not sure how to change my career

Snap, Crackle or Stop:
Change Your Career and Create Your Own Destiny

by Barbara Quinn

This is my all time favourite book about choosing and negotiating career change. I found it very helpful as well as motivating when I was ready to move on from teaching. It’s an excellent guide to what can hold us back from change, how to navigate our way through our challenges and find the courage to make the change we want.

It’s written with warmth and humour and has some great stories and exercises to keep us motivated. From used via second hand to new, Amazon has some great deals on this book, which is alternatively entitled, Somewhere Else You’d Rather Be.

I think I might have an inner calling but …

There has been a lot of discussion about ‘having a life purpose’ and ‘living with purpose’. Enough to leave many people unsure about whether this is ‘real’ or ‘pie in the sky’.

Discover Your Life Purpose Ebook, is a very balanced discussion of living with purpose, whether or not you believe that you have a life purpose. This White Dove publication explores the attributes and attitudes of living with purpose, without trying to persuade. It also has a range of exercises to help you discover what does light your fire.

I want to live my life with passion but…

I don’t know what my passion or purpose  is or how to get started.

I am unashamedly passionate about The Passion Test. It remains the front runner as a very practical as well as inspirational way to find your passion and convert it into a way of life. It widens your research beyond career or occupation to look at every aspect of what would expand you.

It can take time, because when we ask ourselves ‘What would I love to do?’ ‘What would make me really happy?’, many of us don’t have answers. We need answers that are outside of the box of our normal thinking. Chris and Janet Attwood take you through a process they have now used with thousands of people from all walks of life and in all kinds of  life situations, including Janet’s inspiring work with homeless women.

Once you follow and take the test, you will know what your top 5 passions are, what’s important to you.

There is a range of options for taking the test, including the original book, which very quickly takes you into the process and is available on The Passion Test site. The Attwoods have also developed a range of programmes and support material, and trained Passion Test Faciliators around the world.

Special Offer

Until the 31st December, there is a genuine 75% discount on their programme, which includes half an hour one on one consultation with a Passion Test Facilitator. The programme, which is always available in this format, includes The Passion Test Workbook, and Audio and Video workshops facilitated by Janet and Chris. It includes free bonuses at present such as their Great Legends series of interviews, including Jack Canfield, Tony Robbins, T. Harv Eker,Lisa Nichols, Barbara De Angelis, Brian Tracey, Robert Kiyosaki and Marci Shimoff.

Knowing what makes us truly happy in our lives and work, leads us to living full out and in joy, as we follow the path most suited to what we love in life.

I want to work from home

For a variety of reasons, you may wish to work from home. Do I think this is possible? Yes, I do. I have done it, including being willing to use my teaching skills to supplement my home income.

It is also an area where you will find the most Get Rich Quick Schemes with outlandish claims for what you can earn. That is not the same thing as saying you can’t become a millionaire from home, people have. But you will need to take care as you navigate this option. There are two experts in whom I have confidence, but always check what feels true and safe for you. Particularly, don’t rush around a range of options. Find the right path for you, and then follow it, without being distracted by the welter of claims and counter claims in print media and on the internet.

The ‘Safe Hands’ I would recommend you start with, is Carrie Wilkerson, The Barefoot Executive. Carrie concentrates on online options, but has a wealth of other business and sales related information. She is also generous in her free information options. Begin your research here. And don’t be put off by the female bias – Carrie caters for Mr Barefoot too!

Don’t forget to watch Carrie Wilkerson’s  Easy Button in her video section, which we talked about in Part One of Recession Busting to keep a sensible perspective. Take a passionate and inspired but measured, business like approach. If you are desperate, take extra care, for that is when we can make desperately poor choices. There are lots of ads and programmes out there preying on that desperation.

Loral Langemeier, I have already referred to in How Can I Turn My Skills to Advantage above, so this free exercise and audio is a good place to start considering your options. Loral has great insight and experience in the whole process of helping people make their skills and experience into their business.

Enjoy the Process

Be excited and rigorous in your research, self testing and reading. By the end of this process, you will have set the direction on your compass.

I have used all of these free or low cost methods myself.  I started off considering my possibilities, found my route, took action, gained new skills, created a life I loved and at various stages reviewed my possibilities and dreamed bigger, dared more. I know you can do it quicker! More than 20 years ago, when I began, there wasn’t the information and tools available that we have now – there wasn’t even an internet. I picked up these tools and ideas, one at a time, rejecting many more along the way. Nowadays you have immediate access to all these books and programmes.

In Recession Busting Part Three we will look at the next steps in finding and planning your way forward as you dream bigger.

UK weather permitting …(and with apologies, I know many of you were looking for the snow delayed part two) Part Three will be published January 30th 2011.

How to Beat Recession: Step One

Get Real

Recession isn’t just about economy, it’s about how it shrinks our lives, or how the fear of what might happen shrinks our lives.

What are our options?

  • Shrink
  • weather the storm hoping for a better future
  • take tablets
  • pretend it isn’t happening
  • sit around blaming the government, the banks, the boss and the world for our situation.

The alternative is to Get Real – for things to change we need to change

  • choose to expand ourselves and our lives
  • start looking at alternative ways to find our happiness
  • take responsibility for what is happening in our lives right now
  • explore our personal possibilities
  • dream bigger
  • take actions including learning new skills
  • to create the life we want to live

That’s where the personal development world comes in. It’s avowed aim is to give us tools to make us happier, healthier, wiser, more creative, efficient and effective.

Navigating the Personal Development Megastore Market

That’s also where it can get tricky. I won’t rant about online personal development, but it does look like a megastore  (… increasing conglomerates of keyplayers making THE OFFER OF THE CENTURY surround by £1000s of freebies advertised in brilliantly worded ’squeeze pages’ scrolling over 10 pages long. When we download the freebies, we  end up subscribed to another 20 lists, all jammering through our email with the next limited, one time,  offer). Sadly many of these programmes don’t work, won’t even take you to the next step.

To Find the Best Deals and Products

In this glorious madness there are also opportunities to get a great deal on the information, programmes, books and materials that will help. Personal development or self improvement or transformation, call it what you will, does have the answers. All the answers are out there.

But be picky, don’t be pulled in by brilliant copywriting, it is about knowing what is right for you.

You do have these skills, you use them in the supermarket all the time. For all the claims and offers in the supermarkets, there are products that really work, are value for money and,  if you look carefully, some real bargains.

I ask myself a question in supermarkets all the time – how well did their last product work if they are updating it so regularly? True, Personal Development is in Evolution, there is always the next great idea to take us all to our dreams and goals. But truly great products and programmes that really work have a shelf life of years, not months or even weeks. And it doesn’t need to cost a fortune, books are still a great option. If you find the book works, you will then know who would best inspire and support your journey upwards.

That Really Work for YOU

Behind the scenes there are people putting years of effort and experience into designing personal development products that really work. Many  took that journey themselves, to change their lives from dissatisfaction to more love, more happiness, better relationships, lives lived full out with purpose, efficiency and more wealth.

Many creators are genuinely thinking about what you need and how to get it to you at a fair price. Some have generous spirits  and drop off lots of free information. Mark Ling and Carrie Wilkerson are two people who particularly come to mind, for giving free information with no strings. There are creators who have built a wide range of programmes because they understand that people are starting from different places in their lives, have different experiences and goals. But there are also people churning out the Next Great Idea, even selling it on the basis that the last idea they sold couldn’t work without this new twist, eg all those missing instructions for the secret.

Before you begin STEP ONE is  GET REAL

The Warning  Siren

Overnight riches aren’t the truth, and neither is zero to hero in personal development. The Personal Development world is littered with broken promises. That is not to deny the possibility of miracles, they do happen, but like the lottery they are unpredictable Leave a space for miracles in your life, even ask for them, but also plan and walk your talk. Help is always available, but as the great proverb says, “Trust in God, but tie your own camel”.

Before You Start or when you are tempted by another batch of promises of instant change or instant wealth.

Watch Carrie Wilkerson, The Barefoot Executive Easy Button video

Carrie is brave enough to say it like it is. “If it sounds too good to be true, it is.” Remember, personal development is about what you do to you, no one else can do it for you.

Watch the video again when you are tempted to horde yet another Freebie, you will never use, or to join another multilevel marketing certainty or become another Big Launch Super affililiate.

Keep Your Focus on You

To achieve your goals and dreams, you will need to have a strong focus on your vision for your life, your destination. It is easy to get pulled off by distractions and alternatives. Check out the possibilities, but always check

How does this programme, or spending my time this way, relate to my goals and aims?

For instance On Barefoot Executive TV you will also find  a wealth of useful marketing videos, but only watch if they are relevant o what you do or are planning to do.

You Must Have a Shopping List

Have a clear idea of what YOU are looking for. You wouldn’t walk into the supermarket without a shopping list – or if you do will spend a lot more money on products that are liable to go in the bin or rust on the shelves, as well as spending a lot more of your valuable time.

That means knowing where you want to go in the weeks, months ahead, or being clear that you aren’t sure what you can achieve. If that is true for you, then you need to research the possibilities, or even begin to believe that there are possibilities. You will need motivation and ideas from people who help you to think outside of the box. But you to change these motivations and ideas into action plans and actions.

You are capable of far more than you may believe right now. The world is capable of much more than the ups and downs of recession, and life is about far more than being a slave to ’shoulds’ and ‘have tos’. You can be one of the growing army of people who in changing their own lives are changing the world. You can see this crisis as an opportunity. You can overcome your challenges to achieve a full life. You can invest your time and efforts into finding your joy and happiness, whatever it may be. Money helps, but happiness is about far more.

Getting up excited to get on with our day is a human right that far too many people are denying themselves. But you can change that. Get inspired by Heroes who made it, find out what they did and more importantly how they did it. Be inspired and motivated. Everyone of us is a hero in potential. But find what is true for you. Find your path, don’t just follow someone else’s. Learn from their attitudes and actions, but always ask

“Is this true for me? Is this what I want?”

Be very clear about what you want.

This is what we will explore in Step Two of  How to Beat Recession – Get Clear.
